Oman Mega City

Table of Contents

Oman’s construction industry is on the rise, with nearly 3,000 active projects worth a staggering USD 562 billion. BNC, a leading project-tracking platform, is following these developments closely, offering detailed insights into each project’s journey from concept to completion. This growth is part of a broader shift in Oman’s economy, driven by the country’s Vision 2040 plan.

What’s Driving Growth?

Oman’s construction market is expected to grow by 5% annually from 2022 to 2027. A major focus of Vision 2040 is reducing the country’s reliance on oil by boosting non-oil sectors like construction, tourism, and infrastructure. A growing population is driving demand for new housing, commercial spaces, and infrastructure, with the government pouring significant resources into projects for tourism, transportation, and renewable energy. This shift is fueling demand for affordable housing, sustainable energy, and modern infrastructure, all of which are expected to contribute more to the economy in the coming years.

Key Projects Shaping Oman

Here are some of the standout construction projects currently underway:

  • Green Energy Oman (GEO): This massive 25GW hydrogen plant in Duqm is set to produce millions of tons of green hydrogen annually, powered entirely by solar and wind energy.
  • HYDROM Green Hydrogen Blocks: A large-scale renewable energy project across six hydrogen blocks in Duqm and Salalah, spanning 1,900 square kilometers, focused on producing green hydrogen.
  • Sultan Haitham City: Part of Oman’s Vision 2040, this new city in Seeb is a model of sustainable urban planning, covering 14.8 million square meters and featuring vast green spaces.
  • Great Blue City Development: A unique low-rise resort in Muscat, designed to blend traditional Omani culture with modern living. This coastal city will accommodate over 250,000 residents along a 12 km beachfront.
  • Oman Integrated Gas Development: A project aimed at developing newly discovered gas reserves in Qarn Alam to increase the country’s gas production capabilities.

What’s Happening Now?

Oman’s construction sector continues to make headlines with new developments:

  • Roads and Bridges in Salalah: A new infrastructure project in Salalah aims to improve traffic flow and access to tourist attractions with the construction of a modern bridge featuring parking and pedestrian walkways.
  • Sustainable Agricultural City: In Dhofar, Oman is planning a new “agricultural city” that integrates urban living with farming, aiming to boost food security by increasing local crop production.
  • Wind Power Projects: Oman is pushing forward with five wind energy projects that will help cut carbon emissions and generate clean energy as part of the country’s renewable energy goals.
  • New Healthcare Facility: Sultan Haitham City will soon be home to a state-of-the-art, 500-bed medical facility, providing specialized healthcare services for the region.
  • Building Better Schools: Oman is also focusing on education, with new schools being planned in several regions to offer modern, well-equipped learning environments for future generations.

The Big Picture

Oman’s construction industry is booming, and it’s not just about buildings—it’s about transforming the country’s economy and preparing for the future. With a strong focus on sustainability, renewable energy, and modern infrastructure, these projects are set to play a major role in Oman’s growth and diversification efforts. The country’s forward-thinking investments in green energy, housing, healthcare, and education are laying the groundwork for a more prosperous and sustainable future.
